ChatGPT ad specs: text, images, links, and preview checks

Check headline and description lengths, image preparation, destination URLs, and the limits of a local ad preview.

Ad specifications are a set of submission constraints, not a formula for a persuasive ad. Write a clear promise first, then make it fit the fields your account supports. Preview the combination of text, image, and destination before you submit it.

Check the current text limits

OpenAI’s ad creation guide currently lists a 50-character headline limit and a 100-character description limit. Its suggested shorter ranges are 16–24 characters for headlines and 32–48 for descriptions. A recommendation is different from a hard validation limit.

Treat the current Ads Manager or API response as authoritative for the surface you are using. Character counts can also differ around emoji and combined characters; a local counter is a preparation check, not a guarantee that submission will pass.

FieldPublished limitEditorial check
Headline50 charactersDoes the main benefit remain clear without the description?
Description100 charactersDoes it add a specific reason to act?
DestinationSupported valid URLDoes the final page deliver the advertised offer?

Prepare an image that supports the offer

The current ad creation guidance calls for square PNG or JPG assets and describes a maximum 1200 × 1200 resolution. Check the upload control for the exact supported requirements at submission time. Preserve the original asset so you can export a new version if requirements change.

Choose a recognizable product or service image. Tiny labels, dense charts, and a screenshot filled with unreadable text can lose meaning at placement size. If text is necessary inside the image, inspect it at a small rendered size as well as in the source file.

Make the destination part of creative review

Open the final URL after adding campaign tags. Follow redirects and check the mobile page. Verify that the advertised offer is visible, the main action works, and the page does not send a first-time visitor into a broken or unrelated flow.

Use the UTM generator to keep source, medium, campaign, and creative naming consistent. Do not put customer information or credentials into tracking parameters. Tags should identify the campaign, not the person visiting it.

Use the preview as a composition check

Advarde’s free preview arranges your text and an optional local image into a sample card. It lets you spot truncation risks, an unclear offer, or an image that competes with the copy. It is an approximation and does not reproduce every ChatGPT placement or moderation decision.

Keep one main idea in the headline and use the description to explain a concrete benefit or next step. A headline about saving time and a description about a different product feature may fit the character limits while leaving the reader unsure what is being offered.

Save a reviewable creative version

Record the exact headline, description, destination, image filename, and version label in the creative brief. Have the reviewer assess the full combination. If a destination or claim changes later, update the version instead of silently reusing the previous approval.

Once submitted, inspect the platform’s validation and review status. Passing local checks means the draft is ready for platform review; it does not establish approval, eligibility, or expected performance.
