UTM parameters explained

Choose a convention your team can repeat.

Use the same source and medium for comparable traffic. Keep campaign names recognizable, and use content tags to distinguish creative variations.

UTM values are case-sensitive in Google Analytics. The lowercase option helps keep naming consistent. Avoid putting personal information in URL tags.

A few useful answers

Questions, answered.

Does this shorten my URL or track clicks?

No. The tool adds tags to the URL you provide. It does not create a redirect, host a tracking link, or collect clicks. Your website’s analytics setup is responsible for reading the tags.

What happens to tags already in the destination?

The six fields shown in the form replace their matching lowercase UTM parameters. Empty optional fields remove those tags. Other parameters, including click IDs, and the fragment after # are retained.

Can I use dynamic ad-platform placeholders?

This generator builds static links. Add platform-specific placeholders through your ad platform’s tracking configuration, where you can validate their syntax and substitution.

What is a UTM code?

A UTM code is a tag added to a URL so analytics can attribute the visit to a source, medium, and campaign.

Which UTM parameters are required?

utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign are required by Google Analytics’ campaign URL guidance; utm_content, utm_term, and utm_id are optional.
