ChatGPT Ads setup series · Part 1

How to set upa ChatGPT Ads account

Every ChatGPT ad starts with an advertiser account in OpenAI's Ads Manager. Setup is short, but a few choices can't be undone, and agencies have their own rules to plan around.

This guide walks through the whole thing. It's step 1 of our series on running ChatGPT ads from zero to your first report.

Before you start

Have these ready:

  • An OpenAI login. Use a work email, especially if the account belongs to a company or a client.
  • Your website URL.
  • Your logo.
  • Your registered business name and billing details, including a credit card.
  • The country or region, currency, and time zone for your advertiser account.

A quick reality check on the channel: ads may appear on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans in eligible regions. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts don't see ads. OpenAI does not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to under-18s; its guidance also covers ads in logged-out experiences. Read OpenAI's audience guidance.

This guide is for general business advertisers. Outside the US, we do not recommend using this guide for health, medical, mental health, financial, or legal services, or products making wellness claims. Check OpenAI's current category and country rules before proceeding; some categories require specific approval.

Step 1 of 6

Sign in or create an account

Go to ads.openai.com and choose Login or Sign up. Sign in with the OpenAI account you use for ChatGPT, or create one.

If your business already has an advertiser account, don't create a second one. Ask its administrator to invite you.

Step 2 of 6

Choose how to start

Ads Manager gives you two paths.

Start from your website

Enter your URL and Ads Manager drafts a first ad from it. You review the ad, turn it into a campaign, confirm the details, then create the advertiser account.

Skip it

Go straight to account creation and build your first campaign later in Ads Manager.

Both paths end in the same place. The difference is timing: an ad created during signup can go live as soon as it passes review, once billing and account setup allow delivery. If you're not ready to spend, open Ads Manager and pause that campaign.

Step 3 of 6

Enter account details, carefully

You'll enter an advertiser name and the account details. Two things matter here.

One name becomes three

The advertiser name you enter fills three fields at first. You can edit them separately later in Settings, General, but changes have different consequences.

What each name means
NameWhere it is usedWhat happens if you change it
Account NameInside Ads ManagerNo review
Brand NameNext to your ads in ChatGPTBrand review; ad serving pauses until approved
Legal NameBilling and business verificationBusiness review restarts; serving may pause

Get the Brand Name and registered Legal Name right on day one.

Step 4 of 6

Set up billing

Open Billing and follow the prompts: card details, business name, billing address and the email that should receive invoices. Campaigns don't deliver until billing is complete.

Ad spend is billed by OpenAI.

Step 5 of 6

Confirm your logo and names

In Settings, General, check your logo and the three names. Your Brand Name is what people see in ChatGPT, so make it the name your customers know.

Step 6 of 6

Invite your team

In Settings, Users, choose Invite and enter each person's email. Ads Manager has three roles:

  • Admin: full access.
  • Member: creates and manages campaigns.
  • Viewer: view only.

Give Admin to as few people as you can. Most people only need Member or Viewer.

If you manage several advertisers

Agencies and multi-brand teams need to know three rules:

  1. One account per advertiser. Each client or brand gets its own advertiser account.
  2. One login, many accounts. You can belong to several accounts with the same OpenAI login and switch between them.
  3. A creation limit of 10. Once you belong to 10 ad accounts, counting the ones you created and the ones you were invited to, you can't create another yourself. You can still be invited to more.

That limit points to the cleanest setup: the client creates their own account and invites you. They keep ownership of billing and history, and you can still join by invitation after reaching the account-creation limit. Those memberships still count toward the limit on creating accounts yourself.

Common snags

  • "Create account" is missing. You may have reached the 10-account limit, or the selected account isn't eligible to create more (additional accounts need a self-serve account with card billing). Check you're signed in with the right login.
  • Ads aren't delivering. Check billing first, then each ad's review status, then campaign dates and budget.
  • Wrong currency or time zone. These can't be changed. You will need a new account with the correct settings, subject to account-creation eligibility. Review and pause any live campaigns in the old account before moving your setup.

If you're stuck, OpenAI's ads support is reachable through the Help Center.

What's next

With the account ready, the next step is your first campaign: one campaign, one ad group per customer need, and context hints that describe the situations where your ad helps. That's step 2 in this series.

Run it with your AI assistant

Advarde is a workspace for running ChatGPT ads with the AI assistant you already use. Connect your OpenAI Ads account, and your assistant prepares campaigns, reports and changes. You review them, then they're applied. New connections start read-only, and nothing changes without review.

Your first workspace includes a 7-day free trial, starting when your OpenAI ad account is successfully connected and verified. Ad spend is billed separately by OpenAI.
